Chapter Ten

It didn’t take long to get Jack Foster booked in, and in less than an hour they were settled in an interview room with the same duty solicitor in attendance.

‘Right, Jack,’ said Southall. ‘We’d like to go over the night of Friday, first November with you again. And, just to put you in the picture, I’m warning you from the start that we know it was you who took the photograph of the murder victim found in the Dragon Forest and sent it to Lizzie Cooper.’

‘I didn’t—’

‘Remember that little chat we had earlier about forensics?’ said Norman. ‘Well, you might have thought you had deleted it from your phone, but we have what you might call forensic technical experts, and they have found more than enough evidence on it to prove you took that photo. And enough tracking data to show that the phone from which the photo was sent to Lizzie was at your house.’

Jack looked at his solicitor, who shrugged and gave him a nod.

‘You could start by telling us why you sent it,’ said Norman.

‘Lizzie is a bitch,’ said Jack. ‘We went out this one time, and apparently I wasn’t man enough for her. She told everyone I couldn’t do it.’

‘By “it”, do you mean have sex?’ asked Southall.

Foster rolled his eyes. ‘Duh, of course that’s what I mean. But it wasn’t that I couldn’t perform. She was gagging for it. She said she always did it, even on first dates. That put me off, to be honest. I mean, if she’s, like, that free and easy with it—’

‘So why take the photograph and send it to her?’ asked Norman.

‘She said I’d never been with a naked girl and wouldn’t know what to do with one, so I suppose I just wanted to prove she was wrong.’

‘With a dead body?’ asked Norman. ‘D’you make a habit of interfering with dead bodies?’

‘Of course not. And I didn’t interfere with her.’

‘Yet you did,’ said Norman. ‘You see, there was blood beneath her left breast, and a faint fingerprint in blood on it. It didn’t take our pathologist long to work out that whoever that blood belonged to had put his hand on her breast.’

Jack, who’d been sitting with his hands on the table, immediately put his right hand on his lap, out of sight.

‘You don’t need to hide it,’ said Norman. ‘We know from the other day that you’ve a cut on your right hand.’

‘Yeah, but I never—’

‘Oh, but you did,’ said Norman. ‘Forensics again. Our forensic tests show that it was your blood on her body. Now, do you want to tell us how it got there?’

‘But I wasn’t there!’

‘Look, Jack, you might think you’re a criminal mastermind but, trust me, you’re way out of your depth here,’ said Norman. ‘You already told us, on Saturday, that you were there in the forest with your friends. Remember?’

‘Oh, yeah . . .’

‘Not only that, but we also have proof you took a photo of the body. We also have your fingerprints, and your dad’s, on the torch we found at the scene.
